Market Reaction to Acquisition Rumors
Jana Small Finance Bank (Jana SFB) shares experienced a sharp decline on Monday, falling nearly 13 percent to reach a nearly six-month low on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The stock settled at Rs 428 per share, marking a drop of 12.76 percent from the previous close.
The sell-off occurred after Federal Bank Executive Director Venkataraman V addressed media reports that had suggested the lender was planning to acquire a significant stake in Jana SFB. In a statement quoted by NDTV Profit, Venkataraman clarified that the bank is currently focused on organic growth.
Federal Bank Clarifies Strategy
"At this stage, there's no active consideration of any inorganic opportunity," Venkataraman said, directly addressing the speculation surrounding a potential acquisition.
While denying immediate plans for an acquisition, the executive noted that Federal Bank continues to evaluate inorganic opportunities. This stance aligns with the bank's previously stated ambition to evolve into a universal bank, which may involve strategic mergers or acquisitions in the future, though none are currently under active consideration.
Counter-Movement in Federal Bank Shares
In a contrasting market move, shares of Federal Bank rose over 3 percent on the NSE, settling at Rs 348.85. The divergence in share prices highlights the market's reaction to the clarification: investors in Jana SFB sold off positions following the denial of the acquisition rumor, while Federal Bank shares saw a modest gain, potentially reflecting confidence in its independent growth strategy or the relief of avoiding a potentially dilutive or complex acquisition process.
The incident underscores the volatility that can accompany corporate speculation in the banking sector, where unverified media reports can lead to significant short-term price movements until official statements are made.
