Market Closes Lower Amid Profit Booking
The Nifty 50 index snapped its two-session winning streak on October 19, closing 257 points lower at 22,888. The index opened marginally higher by 4 points and briefly surpassed the previous day's high but failed to sustain those gains. It subsequently slumped 330 points from its intraday peak to finish near the day's low.
Market participants and analysts described the movement as a tilt towards the bearish side, driven primarily by profit-taking rather than fundamental deterioration.
Analysts Cite Disproportionate Selloff
Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research, Wealth Management at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, noted that the decline appeared disproportionate given recent corporate results. "With earnings of most banks largely in line with, or ahead of, expectations, barring Axis Bank, the selloff looked disproportionate and reflected profit-taking after last week's sharp rally," Khemka said.
This sentiment suggests that the recent correction is a technical adjustment following a strong upward move, rather than a reaction to negative news flow.
Technical Levels and Support Zones
Technical analysts are closely watching the 22,800 level, which coincides with the 20-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) and a previous swing high. Vinay Rajani, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities, stated that the bullish setup in indicators remains intact. "The latest decline does not, by itself, signal a trend reversal. Nifty could find support around 22,800 and resume its uptrend. However, a decisive break below the positional support at 22,500 would weaken the bullish outlook and warrant caution," Rajani said.
Other analysts identified immediate support zones between 22,650 and 22,700. Hitesh Tailor, Technical Research Analyst at Choice Broking Private Limited, highlighted that the Put-Call Ratio (PCR) stands at 0.88, indicating a cautious options-market setup. Additionally, the India VIX rose 5.33% to 14.7725, reflecting increased volatility.
Trading Strategies and Resistance
For intraday traders, Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research at Kotak Neo, identified 23,050 as a key trend level. "As long as the market trades below this level, weak sentiment is likely to continue. On the downside, the market could retest the 22,750–22,700 zone. On the flip side, if the market moves above 23,050, sentiment could improve, and it may rally towards 23,150–23,200," Chouhan said.
Vatsal Bhuva, Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, noted that the Nifty formed a long bearish candlestick near the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement level at 23,186. He advised that long positions built during the recent mean-reversion rally should be reviewed, particularly if the index breaks below 22,600.
