On August 4, Air India flight AI2379 from Phuket to Delhi experienced sudden turbulence that lasted about four to five minutes. During the episode the aircraft dropped roughly 300 feet, causing a jolt for passengers and crew. The incident prompted an immediate investigation by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
Seventeen people were hurt in the event, including thirteen passengers and four cabin crew members. Among the crew, two suffered spinal injuries near the tailbone and neck, while the rest sustained minor wounds. All injured passengers were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu spoke at a briefing in New Delhi on Wednesday. He praised the crew's bravery and thanked them for their assistance during the ordeal. He confirmed that the crew members with spinal and neck injuries are resting under medical advice.
The DGCA has launched a probe into the turbulence and the sudden loss of altitude. Air India said its teams remain in contact with hospitals and continue to monitor the health of those affected. The airline also noted that all 13 passengers who were admitted have been discharged as of 15:30 hrs on August 5.
Four crew members are still receiving medical care and are under treatment. The airline assured passengers that it is providing support and that its staff are present at the hospitals. No further incidents have been reported on the flight path.
