Rail connectivity extended to north Bastar
The final 17.5-kilometre stretch of the Dallirajhara-Rowghat railway line in Chhattisgarh has been completed, marking the end of the first 95-kilometre phase of the project. Officials confirmed that the track laying between Tadoki and Rowghat is finished, and the section underwent inspection and speed trials by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) on September 22.
The new section is a single-line, electrified broad-gauge railway under the Raipur division of South East Central Railway. While passenger trains are currently operating on the 77.5-km stretch between Dallirajhara and Tadoki, services on the newly completed Tadoki-Rowghat segment will begin once prescribed safety and operational formalities are completed, according to Shiv Prasad, a senior publicity inspector at the Raipur railway division.
Strategic importance for logistics and community
The completion of this line serves a dual purpose: enhancing passenger mobility for residents in remote parts of Bastar and facilitating the efficient transport of iron ore. The Rowghat mines in north Bastar are a key source of raw material for the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) Bhilai Steel Plant in Durg district. The railway line is expected to streamline the movement of this ore, as well as agricultural produce and other local commercial goods.
For local communities, the extension of the rail network promises improved access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. Officials noted that the line will make travel to major hubs like Raipur and Bhilai significantly easier for residents of the surrounding areas.
Security challenges during construction
The construction of the Dallirajhara-Rowghat line presented significant security challenges due to the region's history of Maoist activity. Officials stated that two battalions of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) were deployed exclusively for more than a decade to protect the project from Naxal threats. The successful completion of the line represents a major infrastructure milestone in an area where construction had to proceed amid persistent security concerns.
Part of a larger 240-km project
The 95-km Dallirajhara-Rowghat section is the first phase of a broader 240-km Dallirajhara-Rowghat-Jagdalpur railway project. This initiative is a joint venture involving the Chhattisgarh government, National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), SAIL, and the Railways. The project received in-principle approval in 1993, with construction commencing in 2010-11. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) was entrusted with the construction of the first phase.
Upon full completion up to Jagdalpur, Narayanpur, and Kondagaon, the railway network is expected to provide a more direct connection between the Bastar region and other parts of Chhattisgarh, including Raipur via Durg.
Government response
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai described the completion as a significant achievement for the development of south Chhattisgarh. In an official statement, he expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, stating that the line represents a major step towards expanding economic activities in remote areas. Sai emphasized that coordinated efforts between the Centre and the state government are helping to connect these regions with modern infrastructure, bringing significant changes to the social and economic life of the region.
