NMDC Ltd's Net Zero Ambition
State-run iron ore producer NMDC Ltd has set an ambitious target to achieve Net Zero operational emissions by 2047. This goal covers Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions arising from direct fuel consumption and electricity consumption, respectively.
Strategies for a Low-Carbon Future
To achieve this target, NMDC has identified six key strategies: - Energy efficiency measures - Renewable energy integration - Electrification of its fleet - Adoption of low-carbon fuels - Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) - Demand-side management
The company aims to reduce operational emissions by at least 90%, with the remaining emissions to be addressed through offsetting measures.
Progress and Plans
NMDC has already taken several initiatives to increase the share of renewable energy and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources. These include a 10.5 MW wind energy facility at Chitradurga and solar power installations across its projects.
The company's logistics infrastructure is also expected to contribute to its decarbonisation efforts. The upcoming slurry pipeline project will provide a greener downstream transportation solution, reducing dependence on conventional transportation and associated warehousing requirements.
Iron Ore Production Goals
In addition to its Net Zero target, NMDC aims to increase iron ore production to 100 MT by 2030-31, aligned with the National Steel Policy 2017. The company plans to achieve 60 MT iron ore production this fiscal, with a production ramp‑up plan in place.
Roadmap to Net Zero
The Net Zero roadmap is divided into three phases: - Short-term (FY 2026 to FY 2030) - Medium-term (FY 2030 to FY 2040) - Long-term (FY 2040 to FY 2047)
The company will progressively implement measures across these phases, with energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, and electrification expected to form key components of the initial transition.
