Early Talks for Massive Pre-IPO Round
OpenAI is engaged in preliminary discussions with investors regarding a new funding round that would value the ChatGPT developer at more than $1.2 trillion. According to a person familiar with the matter, the talks were initiated by investors rather than the company. The decision to move forward with this fundraising effort is contingent on the timeline for OpenAI’s initial public offering (IPO).
Strategic Flexibility and Acquisition Goals
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously told Fortune that while an IPO is in the works, it is not expected to take place this year. The additional capital, if secured, would provide the company with the flexibility to potentially push back its public listing by one or two quarters.
Beyond IPO timing, the funding could support OpenAI’s aggressive acquisition strategy. The company has already spent billions acquiring startups, including io, the AI device startup founded by Apple veteran Jony Ive, and Astral, a developer tool company. The new round would provide the resources to continue such mergers and acquisitions.
Competitive Landscape with Anthropic
A funding round of this magnitude would allow OpenAI to widen the valuation gap with its chief rival, Anthropic. Anthropic recently raised funds in May at a valuation of $965 billion.
Anthropic is also preparing for its own IPO, having selected Nasdaq as its listing venue. Reports indicate that the Claude chatbot maker is aiming to raise as much as or more than SpaceX, which raised a record $86.3 billion in its June offering. Anthropic’s IPO could take place as soon as October.
Regulatory and Investor Considerations
OpenAI is also considering legal restrictions regarding the information it can share with private market investors ahead of its IPO. The Financial Times first reported on these talks, noting that the round would allow existing backers to increase their exposure in the company before it goes public.
