Succession Clarity Boosts Sentiment
HDFC Bank shares experienced their largest percentage gain in over four months, rising as much as 3.2 percent on Tuesday. The positive market reaction followed the country's largest private sector lender advancing its CEO succession process by submitting two candidates to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
The bank disclosed the update on Saturday without publicly naming the candidates. The move is intended to replace CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose current term is set to conclude in October. This development addresses a key governance concern that has weighed on investor sentiment, as the stock has fallen 27.2 percent year-to-date despite being approximately 40 percent foreign-owned at the end of June.
Brokerage Views and Target Prices
Several global brokerages have responded positively to the board's decisive action. Macquarie noted that the board approved and forwarded two candidates for a three-year term, viewing this as a resolution to a closely watched governance issue. The firm set a target price of Rs 1,150, indicating an upside potential of more than 62 percent.
Jefferies also retained a positive outlook, highlighting the board's swift movement on four key aspects of the succession plan. These include the appointment of a new CEO, an additional one-year term for V Srinivasa Rangan as Executive Director, the appointment of Jimmy Tata as Executive Director for three years, and the introduction of a fourth Executive Director role. Jefferies set a target price of Rs 880.
Nomura suggested that while an internal appointment could provide initial relief through continuity, a credible external candidate might have a more significant impact over the medium term. The firm set a target price of Rs 950, noting that a new leader with a strong track record could drive a strategic reset and catalyze a re-rating of the stock.
Internal vs. External Candidates
Moneycontrol reported that Kaizad Bharucha, the bank's current Deputy Managing Director, is an internal contender. However, Macquarie noted that under prevailing norms, he would be unable to serve the full three-year term. Analysts suggest that an external appointment, bringing a fresh perspective and a clean mandate, could be a stronger catalyst for the stock.
Technical Outlook
Despite the sharp rebound, technical analysts advise caution. Virat Jagad, Senior Technical Research Analyst at Bonanza, stated that HDFC Bank remains in a broader downtrend, trading below major Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs). Although the Relative Strength Index (RSI) has improved following a bounce from Rs 683 support, trend confirmation is still absent.
Jagad recommended avoiding fresh buying, suggesting that existing positions can be held with Rs 683 as the key stop-loss. A breakdown below this level could lead to a decline toward the Rs 660-636 range.
