Introduction to Aarambh
SBI Mutual Fund has introduced Aarambh, an innovative assisted digital onboarding service designed to facilitate first-time investors in completing their mutual fund onboarding and making their initial investment through a single digital session. This service is aimed at addressing the complexities that often deter individuals from making their first investment.
Features of Aarambh
Aarambh allows an SBI branch official, authorized representative, SBI MF relationship manager, or mutual fund distribution partner to assist prospective investors throughout the onboarding process. The service is paperless and utilizes Aadhaar-based biometric eKYC and eSign, enabling investors to use fingerprint authentication instead of OTPs. This is particularly beneficial for those whose mobile numbers are not linked to Aadhaar. Additionally, the OTP-based route remains available for investors who prefer it.
Benefits for First-Time Investors
Aarambh also enables a fully digital onboarding process for individuals without a PAN, traditionally reliant on physical, paper-based processes. First-time investors can start with Jan Nivesh, which offers Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) starting at Rs 250 a month.
Official Insights
Debasish Mishra, MD & CEO of SBI Funds Management, emphasized that Aarambh aims to make investing more accessible by addressing perceived complexities. "At SBI Mutual Fund, we recognize that for many individuals, the barrier to investing is not interest but the perceived complexity of taking the first step. Aarambh brings together assisted guidance, secure biometric authentication, and digital onboarding to make that beginning more accessible," Mishra stated.
R S Srinivas Jain, Head of Strategy, Digital, IT, and IR at SBI Funds Management, highlighted that Aarambh is part of the fund house's broader digital strategy. "By integrating assisted onboarding with biometric authentication, we are helping simplify the entry point for individuals who may be unfamiliar with the existing onboarding processes," Jain said.
Context and Future Developments
SBI Mutual Fund is India's largest mutual fund house, with average assets under management of over Rs 12.57 lakh crore during April-June 2026. The introduction of Aarambh is expected to further enhance accessibility and convenience for investors across India. As the mutual fund industry continues to evolve, such digital innovations are likely to play a crucial role in expanding the investor base.
