Funding Strategy and MTN Issuance Punjab National Bank (PNB) announced plans to raise up to $1 billion in September 2024 through a medium‑term note (MTN) issue. The base issue will be $500 million in dollar‑denominated bonds, with a greenshoe option of another $500 million that can be exercised if demand is strong. The MTN will provide a low‑cost, flexible funding source that aligns with PNB’s goal of sustaining double‑digit credit expansion.
FCNR Mobilisation and Impact Alongside the overseas bond, PNB is leveraging the Foreign Currency Non‑Resident (FCNR) deposit route, which has already attracted a “tremendous” response. The bank is on track to mobilise more than $2.5 billion through FCNR, surpassing its initial projection of $2‑2.5 billion. This influx of foreign currency deposits is expected to enhance liquidity, support a higher credit‑deposit ratio, and give the bank greater resilience against domestic market volatility.
Credit Growth & Funding Costs With deposit growth projected at 9‑10% and credit growth at 12‑13%, PNB aims to keep its credit‑deposit ratio around 73% currently, moving towards 77‑78% while maintaining the spread between credit and deposit growth. The new funding avenues will also allow PNB to replace high‑cost bulk deposits and reduce reliance on low‑yielding advances, thereby improving net interest margins. The Reserve Bank of India’s supportive policy framework and government backing are key enablers of this strategy, positioning PNB to meet its growth targets over the next 18 months.
