The flood situation in Assam remains critical as the death toll from this year’s deluge has reached 100, while waters continue to engulf hundreds of villages across the state.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin added two more deaths in the last 24 hours: one drowned in Golaghat and another in Karbi Anglong.
The Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) details the fatalities as 60 men, 23 women and 18 children. A correction lowered Sivasagar’s toll from 50 to 49 after a duplicate entry was removed.
Sivasagar remains the deadliest district with 49 deaths, followed by Cachar (22), Karimganj (9) and Golaghat (8). Other districts with casualties include Dhemaji, Nagaon, Udalguri, Sonitpur and Karbi Anglong.
ASDMA estimates that more than 137,000 people in seven districts – Charaideo, Darrang, Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon and Sivasagar – are currently affected by the floods.
Golaghat is the worst-hit area, with nearly 70,000 residents displaced. Sivasagar accounts for about 40,000 affected people, while Jorhat has around 16,000.
The situation has improved slightly from Saturday, when close to 150,000 people across eight districts were reported to be affected.
Authorities have established 125 relief camps and distribution centres in six districts, providing shelter to more than 49,000 flood‑affected families.
According to ANI, 456 villages are under water and about 11,933 hectares of agricultural land have been damaged. Embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have also suffered damage.
Water levels in the Dhansiri at Golaghat and Numaligarh and in the Kushiyara at Sribhumi remain above danger marks. The floods have impacted over 43,000 domestic animals and poultry. Rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations continue, with district administrations monitoring water levels and ensuring supplies of essential commodities and medical aid. Chhattisgarh’s Chief Minister announced a Rs 5 crore assistance package for Assam’s flood‑affected people, aimed at supporting ongoing relief and rehabilitation measures.
