Changing jobs is common today, but every switch also means a new PF member ID. Over time, it's easy to lose track of older Provident Fund accounts, especially if you changed employers several years ago. Many employees only realise something is missing when they apply for a PF transfer or withdrawal. To make things simpler, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has rolled out a Service History feature that helps members view all their employment records linked to their Universal Account Number (UAN).
The feature is available through the EPFO Member e-Sewa portal. After logging in with your UAN and password, click on the 'View' tab and then select 'Service History'. The page displays your employment details recorded with EPFO, including the names of current and previous employers, member IDs, joining dates and exit dates. Instead of searching through old documents, you can now see your service records in one place.
This may sound like a small update, but it solves a problem that many employees face. Sometimes a previous employer doesn't update the date of exit. In other cases, an old PF account isn't properly linked to the UAN. These issues often remain unnoticed for years because monthly contributions continue in the latest account. The trouble usually begins when you try to transfer your PF balance, withdraw money or apply for pension-related benefits.
Checking your service history helps you spot these gaps early. If you find that a previous employer isn't listed or the exit date is missing, you can contact the employer and request the necessary correction. Getting such records updated while the company still has your employment details is usually much easier than trying to fix them several years later.
The feature can also help employees who suspect they have more than one UAN. Although every employee is supposed to have only one UAN throughout their career, duplicate UANs were created in some cases when people changed jobs. Looking at your service history can help identify whether all your employment records are linked correctly. If there is an issue, it should be resolved as early as possible to avoid complications later.
While you're logged into the portal, it's worth checking your KYC details as well. Make sure your Aadhaar, PAN, bank account and mobile number are updated. Small mismatches in these records are among the common reasons why PF claims and transfers get delayed. Spending a few extra minutes reviewing your profile today can save a lot of paperwork later.
Employees who haven't activated their UAN will need to complete that process before using the Service History feature. Once activated, the Member e-Sewa portal also gives access to services such as passbook viewing, online claims, claim status and profile updates, making it easier to manage your EPF account without visiting an EPFO office.
Retirement savings are built over decades, and every PF contribution matters. If you've worked with multiple employers, it's a good idea to log in and check whether your employment history is complete. The new Service History feature doesn't just help you find forgotten PF accounts—it also gives you a chance to correct missing records before they become a problem when you finally need access to your hard-earned savings.
